Comparison of 2007–2012 Korean trends in laser peripheral iridotomy and cataract surgery rates

Abstract: The respective trends in the LPI and cataract surgery rates showed a negative correlation. Although other possible explanations might exist, this result supports the hypothesis that cataract surgery contributes to a reduction in the incidence of LPI in PAC(G) patients.

“…In this study, iridectomy (75%) and iris laser (77%) procedures decreased during the study period. In Korea, by analyzing the Korean Health Insurance Review and Assessment service database between 2007 and 2012 regarding the treatment of primary angle closure (PAC), LI manifested a slow decline (17% decrease), and cataract surgery showed a sharp rise (49% increase) [28]. In Japan, for the treatment of primary angle closure glaucoma (PACG), the amount of antiglaucoma medications dispensed decreased and the frequency of cataract surgery increased, while the frequency of laser LI procedures decreased between 2010 and 2020 [29].…”

“…Another major risk factor for RRD is a pseudophakic eye after cataract extraction [ 14 , 28 ]. With improvements in the technical difficulty and surgical safety of phacoemulsification for cataract extraction, the number of phacoemulsification has been increasing year by year, and cataract extraction tends to be performed at an earlier stage in Korea [ 29 ]. Furthermore, in patients with high myopia, cataract surgery also tends to be performed at a younger age, and RRD as a postoperative complication after surgery is known to be more frequent [ 30 ].…”

“…Studies in England ( 15 ) using the 1968–2004 health administrative database and studies in Scotland using the 1998–2012 national database suggested that the rates of cataract surgery may decrease the number of PACGs ( 16 ). However, these studies were performed early ( 14 17 ), and the results fail to represent the current situation of health care utilization and disease prevalence in China.…”
