Comparison of 10% potassium hydroxide solution versus cryotherapy in the treatment of molluscum contagiosum: An open randomized clinical trial

Abstract: Both treatment modalities were equally effective. Since KOH is inexpensive and confers better cosmetic results compared to cryotherapy, it can be used as a suitable treatment modality for MC.

“…Burning sensation or stinging during application was the most common side effect of KOH in previous studies, similar to this study, 7,9,14,20 while others have also noted erythema and crusting, 20 hyperpigmentation, 10,17 and hypopigmentation. 12, 13 Short reported both stinging (20%) and hyperpigmentation (20%) as the most common side effects. 21 A secondary infection with prolonged treatment, 7,17 hypertrophic scar, 17 ulceration, 12,14,19,22 erythema, 9,12,14,15,19 pruritus, 9,12,14 desquamation, 9,12,14,15,19 hypopigmentation, 13,14,17 and hyperpigmentation 9,13,17,19 are other side effects of KOH in the treatment of MC reported in the literature.…”

“…Hypopigmentation was the most common side effect in two studies from Iran and India. 12,13 The skin phototypes were not specified in these studies. The participants in these countries may most likely have dark skin color, mostly with Fitzpatrick skin phototypes 3 and 4.…”

“…Both forms of treatment appear to have similar efficacy in children, but cryotherapy may be associated with postinflammatory hyperpigmentation or, uncommonly, scarring. 99,100 Imiquimod was not shown to be of benefit compared with placebo in randomized controlled trials. 101,102 Open-label and observational studies 103,104 indicate that cantharidin can be an effective treatment of molluscum contagiosum; however, in 1 small randomized controlled trial of 29 patients, the improvement seen with cantharidin, although greater than with placebo, was not found to be statistically significant.…”

No one treatment showed a clear benefit.…”
