Comparison between transvaginal sonography, saline contrast sonovaginography and magnetic resonance imaging in the diagnosis of posterior deep infiltrating endometriosis

Abstract: Objective To compare clinical evaluation, transvaginal sonography (TVS), saline contrast sonovaginography (SCSV) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the diagnosis of posterior deep pelvic endometriosis (DPE). Methods

“…An important analysis carried out by this study is the search for a cutoff specifically for peritoneal endometriosis since we excluded patients with deep and ovarian endometriosis because we know that a proper transvaginal ultrasonography has great sensitivity for the diagnosis of deep and ovarian endometriosis [29,31,32,36]. In our analysis, we had an increase in the sensitivity of the method with little loss of specificity with high NPV (97%), suggesting that the cutoff for endometriosis is not the same as that for hyperprolactinemia or ovarian tumors.…”

“…We did not include patients with endometrioma or deep endometriosis. In both cases, an adequate transvaginal ultrasonography and physical examination showed an adequate sensitivity to diagnose endometriosis [28,29,30,31,32]. …”

“…Encouragingly, in their recent saline contrast sonovaginography study, Saccardi et al 2 were able to obtain sensitivities of 95% and 81% for the prediction of DIE in the vaginal fornix and RVS, respectively. Interestingly, however, the same study could predict bowel endometriosis with a sensitivity of only 67%.…”
