Non-destructive modeling using a drilling resistance tool to predict wood basic density of standing trees in a eucalypts plantation in North Sumatra, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 23: 6218-6226. Eucalypts are globally selected as the main tree species for pulp and paper industries owing to their good potential growth and wood traits. Wood basic density, which is related to wood biomass yield, is one of the most important wood traits for pulp production and has become a focus in the tree improvement program. Evaluation of this trait in the field is needed to efficiently develop tree improvement programs. The aims of this study were to determine the distribution of basic density in the vertical direction of standing trees, including Eucalyptus grandis, Eucalyptus urophylla, and E. grandis × E. urophylla hybrid (commonly called “urograndis”), and to develop a model for predicting wood basic density using micro-drilling resistance tools of ResistographÒ. The results showed that basic density traits varied within individual trees and within and between species. Average whole tree basic wood densities of 379.9 kg/m3, 400.5 kg/m3, and 440.6 kg/m3 were found for E. grandis, hybrid urograndis, and E. urophylla at 44 months old, respectively. The model developed had a good correlation for predicting wood basic density at 1.3 m height and whole tree basic density, with the R2 for model calibration ranging from 0.52 to 0.76 for 1.3 m wood basic density prediction and from 0.62 to 0.79 for whole tree wood basic density. This study found that the three species of eucalyptus could be used to create a combined model for predicting wood basic density that could be used for each individual species. The model for single and multiple species had a good validation with R2 from 0.51 to 0.72.

Wood density (WD) is a critical determinant of estimating forest above-ground biomass (AGB) and carbon stock. Thus, heterogeneity in WD on individuals within species trees needs to be scrutinized, and acquisition of fixed WD value is essential to estimate carbon stock with confidence. This study investigated intraspecific variation in WD of Syzgium sp., also known as “Jambu” or “Kelat”. It is the most occurring species in study areas, and is regarded as an economically important species. Firstly, one half-diameter drilling from bark-to-pith measurement was taken per tree using Rinntech Resistograph R650-ED at breast height. Meanwhile, 5.15 mm-diameter core was sampled at 1.30 m above-ground, with DeWalt DCF899HP2 20V impact wrench 950 Nm and Haglöf increment borer. WD was estimated for each core sample using a dimensional method. Drilling resistance (DR) profiles were processed using DECOM 2.38m1 Scientific (c), and several independent variables were extracted from the resistogram. All resistogram-derived variables were positively correlated with field WD (R: 0.2 – 0.70). In addition, variability on WD in Syzgium sp. population is predominantly explained by the Resistograph amplitude, expressed as mean raw scale of adjusted DR (DR adj.RawSC) in a regression model. Given that intraspecific variation in WD is a crucial conjecture in forest AGB estimation, it is recommended to analyze with larger samples, and in-depth exploration on Resistograph-based variables is deemed to improve the accuracy of WD prediction models.

Aiming to use lignocellulosic biomass as energy source, one of the process that may aggregate values is the densification process, which allows the production of bioenergy using solid fuels, mainly for reducing transportation costs. In this research, solid fuel from co-briquetting of wood residues from sawmill using commercial kraft lignin as binder was investigated. The effects of compression pressure (900, 1200 and 1500 PSI) and briquette formulation (varying wood and kraft lignin proportion) on the quality and characteristics of briquettes were evaluated. The main findings were that briquetting of wood residues with kraft lignin resulted in an improvement of bulk density, strength rupture modulus, low heating value (LHV) and high heating value (HHV). The briquettes using 4% and 6% of kraft lignin, and submitted to 1200 to 1500 PSI, presented higher bulk density and strength resistance, respectively. On the other hand, the heating values showed the highest results with the addition of 2% lignin at 900 PSI, being the legal range for additives in briquettes for many countries such as in European Union.
