Comparison between lentigo maligna melanoma and other histogenetic types of malignant melanoma of the head and neck

Abstract: Summary A study of 953 invasive cutaneous malignant melanomas of the head and neck was performed to determine differences between lentigo maligna melanoma and other histogenetic types with regard to patients and sites affected; prognosis was analysed in 595 of these cases. The cases studied comprised all head and neck melanomas registered with the Scottish Melanoma Group between 1979 and 1992, apart from the 3% of cases that were unclassifiable or rare histogenetic types. The histogenetic types of melanoma wer… Show more

“…The early work of Fidler 43 suggests that those are the blood vessels capable of accommodating the large tumor bolus conducive to the establishment of the metastatic seed and so suggest that this is a critical factor in the lethality of any given acral melanoma. Although the significance of histologic type may be diminished in multivariate analysis, 44 it seems to us that common sense trumps statistics when assiduously applied.…”

“…The increase in melanoma appears to have affected all main histogenetic types of the disease in Sweden and elsewhere. 8,9 Sunburn and overexposure to sun are the main environmental risk factors of melanoma. 10,11 The data indicate that superficially spreading melanoma and nodular melanoma are related to intermittent sun exposure, whereas lentigo maligna melanoma is related to chronic solar exposure and it is preferentially located in the face.…”

“…10,11 The data indicate that superficially spreading melanoma and nodular melanoma are related to intermittent sun exposure, whereas lentigo maligna melanoma is related to chronic solar exposure and it is preferentially located in the face. 8,[12][13][14] Nodular melanomas tend to be thicker than other melanomas. 15 Familial risks have been shown for cutaneous melanoma, and in population-based studies the risks have been Ͼ 2.00 between first-degree relatives.…”

“…2,3 Among the various types of melanomas, superficial spreading melanoma and nodular melanoma are predominantly found in the scalp. 4 Patients with scalp melanomas have shown poor overall survival.…”
