Previous research studies on supporting EFL (English as a Foreign Language) reading showed that the Kit Build concept mapping (KB-mapping) method provided better efficiency than the Scratch Build concept mapping (SB-mapping) method when evaluated by a delayed comprehension test two weeks after the reading activity, although there was no difference in test results immediately following the reading activity. In the present study, we set out to investigate the following research question "Why does the KB-mapping method have better efficiency than the SB-mapping method in recalling the comprehended information two weeks later although there is no difference just after the reading?" We had observed that there was a difference in map-building behaviors between KB-mapping and SB-mapping methods, so we made the assumption that "KB-mapping method does not promote building the map sentence-by-sentence, although the SB-mapping method does". To confirm this assumption, we used an experiment to compare the learners' map-building progress by the KB-mapping and SB-mapping methods. In the experiment, we monitored the performance of learners in terms of the size of the maps and the progress they made for building maps. We added new functions to our system to record the building process of every learner. We observed that SB-mapping learners tended to use the sentence-by-sentence map-building style, but KB-mapping learners did not. Although there have been no previous research studies about map-building style in supporting reading comprehension with concept mapping, many researchers have indicated that sentence-by-sentence reading is not a good way to comprehend content deeply and keep it in memory for a long time, although sentence-by-sentence reading is useful to understand content rapidly and to keep it for a short time. In map-building, we suspected the same disadvantages and advantages would be true, and this would explain the results, KB-mapping method helps learners to avoid the sentence-by-sentence map-building style, but the SB-mapping method cannot help learners escape from this style of map-building. Based on these results, we will design adaptive support for reading comprehension in our future work.

Abstract-An answer of a learner can be interpreted as a learning evidence for demonstrating the understanding of the learner, while a confidence on the answer represents the belief of the learner as the degree of understanding. In this paper, we propose Kit-Build concept map with confidence tagging. KitBuild concept map (KB map in short) is a digital tool for supporting a concept map strategy where learners can create the learning evidence, and the instructor can access the correctness and confidence information of learners. The practical uses were conducted for demonstrating the valuable of correctness and confidence information in the lecture class. The correctness information was visualized in the control classes, while the correctness and confidence information were visualized in the experiment classes. The observed evidence illustrates that the different information was used for selecting and ordering the supplementary content when the system visualized the different information. The normalized learning gains and effect size demonstrate the different learning achievements between control-and experiment-classes. The results suggest that the confidence information of learner affects the instructor behaviors, which is the positive changing behavior for improving the understanding of their learners. The results of questionnaire suggest that the KB map with confidence tagging is an accepted mechanism for representing the learner's understanding and their confidence. The instructors also accepted that the confidence information of learners is valuable information for recognizing the learning situation.Keywords-Kit-Build concept map; confidence tagging; effect of confidence information; behavior changing of instructor

This paper describes an investigation into the reliability of an automatic assessment method of the learner-build concept map by comparing it with two well-known manual methods. We have previously proposed the Kit-Build (KB) concept map framework where a learner builds a concept map by using only a provided set of components, known as the set "kit". In this framework, instant and automatic assessment of a learner-build concept map has been realized. We call this assessment method the "Kit-Build method" (KB method). The framework and assessment method have already been practically used in classrooms in various schools. As an investigation of the reliability of this method, we have conducted an experiment to compare the assessment results of the method with the assessment results of two other manual assessment methods. In this experiment, 22 university students attended as subjects and four as raters. It was found that the scores of the KB method had a very strong correlation with the scores of the other manual methods. The results suggest that automatic assessment of the Kit-Build concept map can attain almost the same level of reliability as well-known manual assessment methods.
