Comparison between conventional Twin block and a modified Essix twin block in adolescents with Class II malocclusion

Abstract: Objective: To compare the changes in dento-skeletal structures between the conventional twin block and the modified Essix twin block and also to assess the patient's compliance with both the appliances. Material and Methods: A total of 14 female patients in the age group of 10 to 13 years were selected. They were divided into two groups, Group 1 was given the conventional twin block and the other group was given the modified Essix twin block. Lateral cephalograms were taken at two stages-pre-treatment and post… Show more

“…more studies with the same protocol may be needed to identify this effect. 21 The mesial and vertical eruption of lower first molars had been reported in some studies after treatment with twin-block. 30,31 This can be happening due to selective grinding of the acrylic coverage of lower molars to promote guidance of eruption in these teeth.in this study mesial movement and the vertical eruption of lower first molars were seen in both groups with no statistically significant differences between them.…”

“…In Singh's study patients had less speech problem with Essix Twin-block too. 21 The major limitation of our study is the absence of long-term follow-up to evaluate the stability of treatment outcomes.…”

“…Therefore, the introduction of intra-oral scanning and 3D printing in orthodontics may initially simplify processes by supplanting the dental impression and bite registration stages. This is similar for both conventional TBAs produced from an intra-oral scan and hybrid designs where the acrylic occlusal blocks are added manually on thermoplastic baseplates (Behroozian and Kalman, 2020; El Kattan, 2012; Singh et al, 2016). However, this digital-to-manual workflow still requires the models to be mounted on an articulator and manual fabrication of the appliance’s metal and acrylic components.…”

“…The Newport version, developed in the late 1990s, represented an important design variation by replacing the acrylic baseplate (and metal clasps) with a horseshoe-shaped thermoplastic one (O’Sullivan, 2003). Several similar versions have continued to combine thermoplastic bases with manually added acrylic blocks (Behroozian and Kalman, 2020; El Kattan, 2012; Singh et al, 2016). These versions have aimed to improve appliance aesthetics, reduce the baseplate thickness and simplify the fabrication process (by avoiding the need for wire bending).…”

“…Therefore, assessing the impact of these appliances during treatment is imperative. This study was designed to develop and validate a questionnaire for patients with functional appliances, which has been based on several questionnaires [19][20][21][22][23][24][25][26]. The study will also include Arabic translation and assessing the reliability of the questionnaire.…”
