Comparison between chemical and natural treatments for bamboo as building material towards sustainable construction method

Abstract: This paper aims to compare these two different methods, which one is better yet easier to be used by the local community. This paper adopts a content analysis method in order to achieve the research objectives on bamboo as a sustainable construction material. The variables are determine better ways with low cost, short period of time, and the procedure of the treatment. This paper shows that the natural treatment for bamboo is better and much more friendlier to be practised by the local communities. Results of… Show more

“…i Synthetic rubber coatings can be simply applied to the surface of bamboo by brushing or spraying, making the treatment process simple and accessible. [42][43][44][45][46] Various chemicals are used in the treatment of bamboo to increase its durability and protect it from biodegradation. The chemicals act as preservatives, extending the lifespan of bamboo in a variety of applications.…”

“…Bamboo can be treated by natural methods such as drying, heating (boil, fired, oven), steaming, soaking, smoking, oil application, and impregnation of natural resin (e.g., rosin). The use of natural treatment for bamboo is environmentally friendly compared to chemical treatment, especially for the local communities who better understand the workings of bamboo [26]. Chemical treatment is used by various researchers since it can be done in less time compared to the natural method.…”

“…The experiment showed that the application effect of bamboo in light buildings was better than that of wood. Setiyowati and Mappaturi (2020) adopted the content analysis method to compare the natural treatment of bamboo with chemical treatment, and they developed a good bamboo treatment method, which can be applied to bamboo buildings. With the increase of demand for wood resources and the decrease of supply, it is attempted to combine bamboo and wood for CLT manufacturing -BCLT.…”
