Comparison Between Acrylic Cage and Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) Cage in Single-level Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion

Abstract: This study suggests that the use of Acrylic cage is associated with good clinical and radiologic outcomes and it can be therefore a good substitute for bone graft and other cages in ACDF.

“…Even empty cages are associated with [29,32]. A recently published randomized controlled trial on acrylic cages versus PEEK cages documented significant clinical and radiological improvement in favor of acrylic cages [28]. The study suggests more cost effectiveness of acrylic implants compared to PEEK, although it is limited by small patient numbers and short-term follow-up.…”

“…The main source of pain relief in the procedure of anterior cervical discectomy is decompression of the nerve root by removing the herniated disc and/or osteophytes. Numerous studies on ACDF have demonstrated satisfactory clinical and radiological results in the majority of patients [1,8,[28][29][30]. Even in the older population ACDF surgery will result in a significant gain in health-state utility [31].…”

“…A few studies found PMMA comparable or better than PEEK, in terms of mechanical stability and functional outcome. [13][14][15] In conclusion, we emphasize the need for further long-term follow-up research of cervical spine arthroplasty. New prosthesis design mechanisms seeking to mimic the structure of a natural disk may provide more natural segmental mobility.…”

“…Early Cage was made of metallic materials, however, because of the debris effect, hard to absorb, always induced complications like metal corrosion, stress block, foreign body sensation and metal structure loose, the material is replaced by carbon fiber, PEEK and other polymer materials [14][15][16]. Combined usage of cervical Cage and plate increases the stability and the chances of fusion, increases patients' early off-bed activity and decreases days of hospitalization and complications [17,18]. The current study suggest that titanium plate internal fixation with decompression and bone grafting is an effective and safe way for the treatment of cervical spondylotic myelopathy with three or more lesion segments, worth of promotion and wide spread.…”
