Comparison and evaluation of lupus nephritis response criteria in lupus activity indices and clinical trials

Abstract: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a systemic autoimmune disease with diverse manifestations. Although the approval of new therapies includes only one agent in 50 years, a number of promising new drugs are in development. Lupus nephritis is a dreaded complication of SLE as it is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Advancing the treatment of lupus nephritis requires well-designed clinical trials and this can be challenging in SLE. The major obstacles involve identifying the correct populatio… Show more

“…Even though some authors suggest using the PCR, Houssiau et al, highlighted the importance of a 24H-P for proteinuria measurement as part of a complete initial evaluation of the patient with SLE and possible LN [21]. Moreover, Corapi et al, emphasized that PCR may lack accuracy for the quantification of proteinuria in LN compared to other glomerulopathies [22], thus the evidence favors 24H-P.…”

“…A recent meta-analysis highlighted the methodological flaws of studies on the validity of PCR as a quantitative test for proteinuria and recommended the use of 24H-P for accurate proteinuria measurement [81]. In addition, Corapi et al, also recommended the use of 24H-P instead of PCR in clinical research and drug trials [22].…”

“…Lupus nephritis (LN) is one of the most serious complications of SLE since it is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. In the United States, approximately 35% of adults with SLE have clinical evidence of nephritis at the time of diagnosis; with an estimated total of 50 to 60% developing nephritis during the first 10 years of disease (Lee et al, 2010;Hahn et al, 2012;Corapi et al, 2015).…”
