Background: Conventional Cervical Cytology is the most widely used cervical cancer screening test. The incidence of cervical carcinoma is incredibly high in developing countries due to lack of proper knowledge. The extensive use of cervical screening with Papanicolau smears had considerably increased the detection of precancerous and cancerous lesion of uterine cervix. Study was conducted to evaluate cytohistological correlation and to calculate concordance and discordance of Pap smear in detection of precancerous and cancerous lesions of uterine cervix. Materials and Methods: A total of 54 samples reported in Pap smear as cervical intraepithelial lesions and suspicious for invasive malignancies were selected and correlated with corresponding histopathological findings. It was an observational study done for a period of 18 months from November 2016 to May 2018 at UCMS-TH. All the statistical evaluation was done by using SPSS version 20. Results: During the study period 54 cases were evaluated. Atypical Squamous Cell of Undetermined Significance was the common abnormal findings in the Pap smear with frequency of 26 (48.1%). Out of total 54 cases of Pap smears, 30 (55.55%) were concordant while discrepancies occurred in 24(44.44%) cases with cervical biopsy. Conclusions: The study revealed a good correlation between cervical cytology and cervical biopsy. We also concluded that conventional Pap smear is a cost effective test for the early detection of precancerous and cancerous cervical lesions.

Background: This study was carried out to evaluate cases of unhealthy cervix by using Pap (Papanicolaou) smear, colposcopy and cervical biopsy and to arrive at a definitive diagnosis. It correlated the findings of Pap smear, colposcopy and histopathology. It is important to strictly implement the screening program and spread awareness of the disease symptoms and its management to reduce the overall incidence of morbidity and mortality reported due to cervical cancer.Methods: A total 120 patients satisfying the inclusion/exclusion criteria were recruited for the study and informed consent was taken from all the participants. Pap smear was taken for all the cases. Then cases were subjected to colposcopy followed by biopsy. All the findings were correlated and analyzed. The findings of Pap smear and colposcopy were correlated with the gold standard of histopathology.Results: The sensitivity and specificity of Pap smear and colposcopy with respect to cervical biopsy were 53.1% and 98.7%, 87.87% and 72.72% respectively. Colposcopy had higher sensitivity and lower specificity than Pap smear for screening of cancer cervix.Conclusions: Cervical cancer is one of the preventable and highly curable conditions when diagnosed in the precancerous stage. The incidence of deaths resulting from cervical cancer can be brought down with adequate cervical cancer screening. Colposcopy and colposcopy directed biopsy should be done along with Pap smear in screening for early detection of cervical cancer since the accuracy of detection of cervical abnormalities is higher when these two methods are used complementarily.

Background: Cancer of cervix ranks as the third common malignancy in females worldwide. In developing countries like India, carcinoma cervix is the second commonest malignancy affecting females. In India, every year 1,26,000 new cases are identified and 67,477 deaths occur due to cervical carcinoma. Cervical carcinoma affects women of age 15-44 years and disease peaks at 55-66 years. On average, Indian women have a 2.5% risk of developing carcinoma cervix. It was estimated worldwide that every 5th woman, who suffer from cervical cancer belongs to India.Methods: A comparative study which included 110 married women of age 20 to 65 years. Women who presented with white discharge, lower abdominal pain, post coital bleeding and post-menopausal bleeding were subjected to Pap smear and colposcopy guided biopsy.Results: A total 53.6% women had inflammatory smear, followed by 34.5% women with normal Pap smear, 0.1% women had bacterial vaginosis, 6.4% women had LSIL and 4.5% women had HSIL. Authors found that 63.6% women had chronic cervicitis. 15.4% had chronic endo papillary cervicitis, 13.6% had CIN 1, 5.4% women had CIN 2 and 1.8% women had squamous cell carcinoma. Association of Pap smear with histopathology is statistically significant (p value <0.001).Conclusions: Pap smear can be used as screening test for detecting premalignant lesions of cervix. Colposcopy guided cervix biopsy has got better specificity than Pap smear, so all symptomatic women should be subjected to colposcopy guided cervix biopsy to detect carcinoma at early stage.
