Oribatei (Acari, Cryptostigmata) are found in a variety of terrestrial habitats, and many are associated with lichens; the relationship ranges from casual to highly dependent. Eighty‐three species associated with lichens have been surveyed, and a tentative classification, based on their ecological requirements, is presented: Group A consists of species restricted to lichens as a biotope, though occasionally occurring as accidentals in other habitats; Group B consists of species which while preferring lichens as a habitat and feeding source are also adapted to existence on other plants (though in some cases their immatures may be lichen‐restricted); Group C consists of species which, though frequently found on lichens, are equally common in other biotopes, particularly mosses, and must be regarded as much more generalized in their feeding habits. Certain aspects of oribatid‐lichen specificity are discussed. The importance of oribatid‐lichen associations from the point of view of soil fertility and energetics is emphasized.

SUMMARY4-Hydroperoxyisophosphamide (Il), an effective antitumor agent has been labelled with carbon-14. The carbon-I4 label was incorporated into the C-6 position of the molecule to give (VII).The overall radiochemical yield was 4.4% based on barium carbonate-I4C. The labelled compound obtained was used for absorption and metabolism studies. lsophosphamide (1) is an experimentally effective antitumor agent and is thought to exert cytotoxicity after i n vivo metabolic transformation. Some recent studies have suggested that the activation of isophosphamide i s caused by enzymatic C-4 hydroxylation i n animal liver. Takamizawa1lZ) in our laboratory has synthesized 4-hydroperoxyisophosphamide (11) as the suggested active species of isophosphamide, and reported that i t exhibited marked antileukemic activities in both --in vivo and in vitro experiments and that there were significant differences not only in i n vivo activity but also i n -vivo metabolic behavior between isophorphamide and its active form (11).For studies of the incorporation of this canpound (11)
