Comparing the topologies of satellite electrical power subsystem based on system level specifications

Abstract: This paper focuses on evaluating three main design criteria including efficiency, reliability and cost for different topology schemes of Electrical Power Subsystem (EPS) of a satellite in Low Earth Orbit. Selecting an appropriate topology may increase the overall EPS efficiency and extend the lifetime of satellites. In this article, ten basic EPS topologies are studied, evaluated and compared. In order to choose a more efficient and more reliable EPS topology, along with cost considerations, the mentioned para… Show more

“…For example, in [12] an extended review of the state of the art of CubeSats EPS is included. In addition, a simple classification of satellite EPS can be made according to the solar array energy transfer and the bus voltage regulation methods [13]. On the one hand, based on the energy transfer method, EPS architectures are classified as DET and MPPT.…”

“…O EPS do CubeSat gera energia a partir de células fotovoltaicas (FV), processa e regula a energia, em diferentes níveis, suprindo os subsistemas e garantindo energia para a execução da missão do satélite [3], [4]. O EPS, também, armazena energia para os períodos de pico de demanda ou para operação no período de eclipse.…”

“…One of the most expensive spacecraft sub-system is the EPS and in particular the battery unit. 1 It is worth noting that there are not two identical spacecraft batteries, because the suppliers work closely with satellite manufacturers to customize the energy storage devices in order to meet the requirements set by the customer as function of the mission. Therefore, decreasing of battery unit costs and development times is a very interesting challenge.…”
