Comparing the Fertility of Soils under Khaya ivorensis Plantation and Regenerated Degraded Secondary Forests

Abstract: Problem statement: It is widely accepted that conversion of natural forest to other land use types leads to deterioration of soil fertility and increased soil compaction which consequently become degraded secondary forests. Degraded secondary forest is indicated by low soil fertility and organic matter due to imbalance input and output from original vegetation. Forest plantation through planting fast growing exotic species is usually implemented to curtail degradation of secondary forest or forestland a… Show more

“…These environmental variables, known and established to cause variation in species data may include precipitation (Buot andOkitsu, 1999, Ohsawa 1995), temperature (Buot and Okitsu, 1999;Richards, 1952), humidity (Richards, 1952), soil conditions (Heryati et al, 2011b, Suzuki et al, 2002, microbial composition, natural disturbances particularly, typhoon, erosion and landslides and anthropogenic disturbance history (Heryati et al, 2011a;Muniandy et al, 2009;Hong et al, 1995;Osumi et al, 2003). However, more works and experiments have to be done in testing these variables on Mount Makiling.…”

“…However, the saturation of the region with industrial objects significantly affected the microelement composition of the soil and plant cover and created ecological and toxicological risks (Heryati et al, 2011;Minkina et al, 2012). There are a large number of sites worldwide polluted with trace elements as a result of human activities.…”

“…Forest rehabilitation is one of the vital strategies used to restore a degraded forest to its initial state (Singh et al, 2011;Arifin et al, 2008;Hamzah et al, 2009;Zaidey et al, 2010: Heryati et al, 2011a2011b). Rehabilitation also helps to reduce the demand for woody and non-woody products from natural forest.…”
