Comparing the effectiveness of shade measurement by intraoral scanner, digital spectrophotometer, and visual shade assessment

Abstract: Objective: Trios3 (3Shape, Denmark) intraoral scanner is complete with a tooth shade measurement function, but there is limited information about its efficacy. This in vivo study aimed to evaluate this function in relation to visual and spectrophotometric shade determination. Materials and Methods: Ten dental students from Semmelweis University determined tooth shade for 10 volunteers using Vita A1-D4 (VC) and Vita Linearguide 3D-Master (LG) guides, Vita Easyshade spectrophotometer (ES) and Trios 3 intraoral s… Show more

“…Digital photographs are a common interaction tool in dental workplaces [11]. Digital photographs are able to capture clear images of the tooth and have been progressively used to document the whole clinical procedure [2,12]. Predictably, digital photographs of natural teeth can show noteworthy color modifications when the optimal conditions of light illumination are not used [12].…”

“…The shade selection method applied here may be seen ambiguously as it has been described not to lead to consistent results (Czigola et al, 2021). In a clinical situation, the surrounding of a tooth, that is, hard and soft tissues affect the appearance of a specific tooth and subjective judgment is also affected by various factors such as skin color, lighting conditions (Revilla-León et al, 2021), and viewing distance (Klinke et al, 2021).…”

“…5 Other studies also suggested that intraoral scanners offer a reliable alternative method for shade selection with visual verification. 38,39 Other studies concluded that shade selection using CEREC Omnicam or 3Shape Trios is not considered an accurate method. [40][41][42] However, no clinical studies compared the intraoral scanners having the shade selection tool to both VSS and the latest version of Vita Easyshade V.…”
