“…The psychiatrists began their examination by repeating the DIS -a procedural validity paradigm (Spitzer and Williams 1980). They then improvised questions to pursue any topics about which they had doubts, and kept a record of their own clinical impressions of the presence of the DSM-III diagnostic criteria, using a separate DSM-III checklist (Helzer et al 1985b), which could then be scored to produce diagnoses. Thus we were able to compare the lay interviewer results with two sets of psychiatrist ratings, a repeat DIS and a "clinical impression" based on a structured assessment.…”
