Comparing the accuracy and speed of four data-checking methods

Abstract: Double entry locates and corrects more data-entry errors than does visual checking or reading the data out loud with a partner. However, many researchers do not use double entry, because it is substantially slower. Therefore, in this study we examined the speed and accuracy of solo read aloud, which has never before been examined and might be faster than double entry. To compare these four methods, we deliberately introduced errors while entering 20 data sheets and then asked 412 randomly assigned undergraduat… Show more

“…For quality assurance, 20% ( n = 53) of the data was randomly cross-checked with the data on paper. The data set was then visually checked for missing data and entry errors, and further descriptive statistics were conducted for each variable to detect outliers [ 39 , 40 ].…”

“…The data from these paper logbooks were manually entered onto an Excel spreadsheet. Accuracy of manual data entry was verified through identifying and manually reconfirming outliers prior to data analysis and having every fourth entry reconfirmed by an additional author 8 . Academic performance, as determined by their examination results, was obtained from Excel spreadsheets in the form of official University of Sydney digital records.…”
