Comparing Scapular Position and Scapular Dyskinesis in Individuals with and without Rounded Shoulder Posture

Abstract: Purpose: Altered kinematics of the scapula or scapular dyskinesis (downward rotation, anterior tilt, and protraction) contribute to impingement syndrome by decreasing the subacromial space. Given the critical role of scapular position and movement in the function of the shoulder, the aim of this study was to compare scapular position and dyskinesis in individuals with and without rounded shoulder posture. Methods:By employing the convenience sampling method, 21 individuals with rounded shoulder posture (11 fem… Show more

“…3 The scapular position in relation to the thorax is important because its abnormal position disrupts the normal bio-mechanics of the shoulder joint, leading to injury or abnormal posture. 4 Optimal shoulder function requires proper positioning and movement of the scapula on the thorax. 5 Altered scapular motion and position have been termed scapular dyskinesis.…”

“…Its occurrence is reported to be 73% on the right side and 66% on the left side. 1 Considering the contemporary sedentary work conditions and prolonged use of technological devices such as smartphones and tablets, this condition appears to be commonplace. Individuals who sit for extended periods may experience fatigue in the lumbar extensors, adopting a comfortable and slouched sitting position.…”

“…Therefore, alterations in scapular position can disrupt the normal biomechanics of the shoulder joint, leading to injuries. 1 Changes in the position and kinematics of the scapula affect the activation of muscles in the scapulothoracic region. 5 Therefore, exercises targeting the muscles around the scapula play a crucial role in rehabilitation for rounded shoulder posture.…”

“…A round shoulder posture (RSP) or forward shoulder posture (FSP) is defined as an increase in the distance between the inferior angle of the scapula and the spinous process of the vertebra. It is one of the common postural abnormalities in which the acromion moves anteriorly relative to the spinous process of the seventh cervical vertebra [1]. The RSP is a postural condition described as downward rotation, depression, anterior tilt, and medial rotation of the scapula [2] and is associated with poor postural habits, backpack carrying, repetitive overhead activities, computer use, mouth breathing, and long-term study time [1,3].…”
