Comparing Condensed and Hydrolysable Tannins for Mechanical Foaming of Furanic Foams: Synthesis and Characterization

Abstract: This study examined the potential of hydrolysable tannin in comparison to condensed tannins for the production of furanic foams. The results indicate that chestnut tannin presents lower reactivity and requires a stronger acid for the polymerization. Additionally, foamability and density were found to be dependent on both surfactant concentration and tannin type, allowing lower densities for mimosa tannin and lower thermal conductivities for chestnut-based foams. Mimosa tannin was found to have the highest comp… Show more

“…Tannins are water-soluble polyphenolic compounds that are synthesised as mechanical defence mechanisms to prevent plants from being consumed by animals. Terrestrial plants synthesise two classes of tannins, which are condensed and hydrolysable tannins [1,2]. Condensed tannins are made up of flavan-3-ols and flavan-3,4-diols, while hydrolysable tannins are made up of gallotannins and ellagitannins [3].…”

“…Under acidic conditions, tannins and furfuryl alcohol can undergo co-condensation reactions to obtain tannin–furan (TF) foams. This foam has attractive properties such as a light weight, excellent refractoriness, and thermal insulation [ 19 , 20 , 21 ]. However, the self-condensation reaction of furfuryl alcohol occurs under acidic conditions, which dominates the reaction, and almost no co-condensation reaction with tannins occurs [ 22 ].…”

“…Despite the development of TF showing a favorable trend, there was a very serious problem that plagued many research groups, which was its high pulverization ratio. The basic properties of different types of TF were evaluated, in which it was evident that there were significant differences between due to tannin's characteristics [7]. It is well known that the activities of tannin resources are highly related to their flavonoid unit types and quantity [8].…”
