Comparing Compact and Quadrature Polarimetric SAR Performance

Abstract: The respective classification accuracy levels of compact and quadrature polarimetric synthetic aperture radars (SARs) are compared through results reported in the literature. Classification methodologies are critiqued. A faulty methodology compromises many of those studies. An appropriate methodology leads to trustworthy results. When correctly implemented, classifications from hybrid dual-polarimetric data achieve accuracy levels comparable to those from a quadrature-polarized SAR, to within a few percent.Ind… Show more

“…Compared with FP SAR, CP SAR is a new type of sensor with a wider swath of coverage and smaller energy budget [18]. According to the polarization state, three CP SAR modes exist, including π/4, dual circular polarization, and circular transmission and linear reception (CTLR) polarization [19][20][21]. The CTLR mode is simpler, more stable and less sensitive to noise than the other two modes.…”

“…The rate of growth was slow in the initial phase but observed fast post mid-July for both early and late sown cases which were reflected in terms of polarimetric parameters for the above plant biophysical parameters. C2 based parameters yielded sensible results but converting C2 to C3 for getting full-pol decomposition did not yield expected results [19]. The Freeman 2 and Van Zyl decomposition did not add any significant result to the Raney decomposition, but Freeman 3 component decomposition shows better results than the other two.…”

“…To do so, it is necessary to make some assumptions about the backscattering properties. As highlighted in [25], the appropriate methodology is to directly compare the HP with the FP mode without transforming to a pseudo FP covariance matrix, thus avoiding any assumptions. In this study, we follow Raney's methodology [25] and perform the study on features extracted directly from the simulated HP data.…”

In this study, we follow Raney's methodology [25] and perform the study on features extracted directly from the simulated HP data. It is important to be aware that the use of HP mode in the UAVSAR instrument will not increase the swath width due to the design of the system.…”
