“…Similar VIP-ir CSF-contacting neurons have been demonstrated in the region of the Ac/SL of the Pekin duck (Korf and Fahrenkrug 1984), the mallard (Korf and Fahrenkrug 1984), the dove (Silver et al 1988), the pigeon (Hof et al 1991), the junco (Saldanha et al 1994), and the chick (Kuenzel and Blähser 1994;Kuenzel et al 1997). The VIP-ir cells in the LSO/Ac/SL area displayed classic CSF-contacting characteristics similar to those of perikarya located within or adjacent to the ependymal layer and to distinct knob-like dendritic protrusions into the ventricle (Vigh and Vigh-Teichmann 1973;VighTeichmann andVigh 1974, 1983). Here, even though fewer in number than VIP-ir CSO-contacting cells, cGnRH-I-ir cells were indeed localized within or adjacent to the ependymal layer of the LSO, and cGnRH-I-ir dendritic processes did protrude into the ventricle.…”

“…Cerebrospinal-fluid-contacting neurons intercalated in between the crown of ependymocytes, but clearly differing from them with regard to their cytological features, have been described by Vigh and Vigh-Teichmann (1973). This situation is also known in certain regions of the ventricular surface of the brain in mammals and other vertebrates (for reviews, see Vigh-Teichmann and Vigh 1979;Vigh and Vigh-Teichmann 1998).…”
