Comparative Transcriptome Analysis Reveals a Preformed Defense System in Apple Root of a Resistant Genotype of G.935 in the Absence of Pathogen

Abstract: Two apple rootstock genotypes G.935 and B.9 were recently demonstrated to exhibit distinct resistance responses following infection by Pythium ultimum. As part of an effort to elucidate the genetic regulation of apple root resistance to soilborne pathogens, preinoculation transcriptome variations in roots of these two apple rootstock genotypes are hypothesized to contribute to the observed disease resistance phenotypes. Results from current comparative transcriptome analysis demonstrated elevated transcript ab… Show more

“…As previous studies have shown, a systematic and organismal response occurs when plants suffer one or more bio/abiotic stress, mediated by Ca 2+ , ROS, phytohormones, and cellular, genetic or metabolic processing 44,45 . We only investigated the correlation of five co-upregulated genes with other well-identified resistance genes; however, the complexity of the regulatory networks was greater than expected (Fig.…”

“…The Cys2/His2-type zinc finger proteins are not only related to plant stress responses, but also enhance the resistance against pathogen infection [43]. ERFs, another important group of TFs, which play roles in integrating ET/JA signals [31,44], activating the phenylpropanoid biosynthetic pathway and expression of resistance genes [45,46], were activated in resistance cultivar at day 5 post-infestation. We observed increased transcript abundance of two key ERFs, including ERF1 and ERF9.…”

“…We 202 also found eleven leaf rust 10 disease resistance receptor-like protein kinase isoforms to be 203 upregulated as well. This is an indication that the impatiens plant recognizes infection by P. MLO proteins were initially identified as common powdery mildew susceptibility genes, but recent 215 studies have found them to be involved in plant-oomycete interactions as well (Zhu et al 2017;216 Naveed and Ali 2018). We found six homologs of MLO genes to be differentially expressed in I.…”
