“…Burkholderia anthina MYSP13 strain was also found in lateral root emergence locations indicating that colonization occurred in sugarcane root and shoot (Malviya et al, 2019). Recently endophytic plant growth promoting strain Enterobacter roggenkampii ED5 labeled with GFP had been effectively colonized the sugarcane tissues (Guo et al, 2021).…”

“…A recent study has shown that maize plants inoculated with A. brasilense sp245 or H. seropedicae HRC54 have higher expression of NR and NiR genes, respectively, when compared to non-inoculated plants [ 82 ]. Sugarcane plants inoculated with Enterobacter roggenkampii ED5, as well as wheat, maize, and cucumber plants inoculated with Paenibacillus beijingensis BJ-18, have shown higher expression of NR genes, indicating that these bacteria might stimulate nitrate reductase activity in these plants [ 76 , 83 ].…”

“…However, the success of this association may be dependent on the plant and bacteria genotypes as well as the N content present in the soil [ 76 , 79 , 83 ]. Several studies have shown that inoculation with diazotrophic bacteria may not influence nitrogen metabolism, although a greater accumulation of nutrients, growth, and development of plants can be observed [ 11 , 77 , 88 , 92 ].…”

“…But, other rice cultivars, such as 9311, TKM9 and IR36, have also been used ( Chen et al, 2015 ; Xie et al, 2017 ; Rekha et al, 2018 ). Besides rice, other plants such as wheat, sugarcane, and tobacco have been used in these studies ( Camilios-Neto et al, 2014 ; Paungfoo-Lonhienne et al, 2016 ; Liu et al, 2020 ; Malviya et al, 2020 ; Guo et al, 2022 ). Compared to the hosts, there is much more variability in the PGPB used in these studies.…”

“…While results from these studies are encouraging, similar studies investigating the interactions between PGPB and different crops need to be pursued. In recent years, there have been some studies using genetic and molecular approaches in crops such as rice, wheat, and sugarcane to investigate these interactions at the host level, which is encouraging ( Chen and Zhu, 2013 ; Camilios-Neto et al, 2014 ; Chen et al, 2015 ; Paungfoo-Lonhienne et al, 2016 ; Xie et al, 2017 ; Rekha et al, 2018 ; Wu et al, 2018 ; Brusamarello-Santos et al, 2019 ; King et al, 2019 ; Thomas et al, 2019 ; Liu et al, 2020 ; Malviya et al, 2020 ; Cook et al, 2022 ; Guo et al, 2022 ; Wiggins et al, 2022 ; Xu et al, 2022 ). This mini-review focuses on key findings from some of these studies and discusses what lies ahead.…”
