Comparative survival analysis of adjuvant therapy with iodine-131-labeled lipiodol to hepatic resection of primary hepatocellular carcinoma

Abstract: Postoperative adjuvant therapy with intra-arterial (131)I-lipiodol to hepatic resection of HCC significantly improves overall and disease-free survival rates and reduces recurrence rates. However, well-designed randomized trials are needed to arrive at conclusive evidence.

“…Two meta-analyses compared the outcomes of surgical resection in combination with I 131 lipiodol versus surgical resection alone [36, 40]. Both of them favored the combination therapy in terms of OS, DFS, and recurrence [36, 40].…”

“…These comprise Items concerning clinical opinion (1), single arm (4), comparative (4) and RCTs (2), with 3 Elements providing updated information for their corresponding Items. Following publication of the two RCTs [3,7], two systematic overviews have been published [8,9]. These identified some Elements that had not been located earlier.…”

“…The first analysis was conducted on 14 November 2005 when the DMSB Table 1 Elements identified for the evaluation of the role of I131L in resectable hepatocellular carcinoma -more extensive summary details of some are provided by Gong et al (2014) (Table 2), the accumulated evidence from these, and from the earlier information, suggested a current smaller HR = 0.415 with a greater Prob (HR b 0.57) = 0.841 (Table 3). However, once combined with the interim data from the AHCC03 trial [H1], the HR = 0.53, and hence moved closer to the equivalence range, and with a correspondingly reduced Prob (HR b 0.57) = 0.624 (Table 3).…”
