Litsea cubeba is a plant of Lauraceae and Litsea. It is a valuable plant and has a wide range of uses, including in traditional Chinese medicine. Herein, Litsea cubeba wood was harvested from Henan Province, The active ingredients were extracted from Litsea cubeba wood by modern techniques such as gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), thermal gravimetric analysis, and thermal desorption gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The analysis results show that the wood of Litsea cubeba contains a large amount of valuable active substances that can be utilized in medicine, bio-energy, and spices and flavorings, and large-scale cultivation of this plant could be beneficial.

In this study, we evaluated the effect of the herbicide propyl 4-(2-(4,6-dimethoxypyrimidin-2-yloxy)benzylamino) benzoate (ZJ0273) on barley growth and explored the potential to trigger growth recovery through the application of branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs). Barley plants were foliar-sprayed with various concentrations of ZJ0273 (100, 500, or 1000 mg/L) at the four-leaf stage. Increasing either the herbicide concentration or measurement time after herbicide treatment significantly impaired plant morphological parameters such as plant height and biomass, and affected physiological indexes, i.e. maximal photochemical efficiency (F v /F m), quantum yield of photosystem II (Ф PSII), net photosynthetic rate (P n), and chlorophyll meter value (soil and plant analyzer development (SPAD)). Cellular injury of herbicide-treated plants was also evidenced by increased levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and antioxidative enzyme activity. Elevated levels of herbicide significantly reduced the activity of acetolactate synthase (ALS)-a key enzyme in the biosynthesis of BCAAs. In a separate experiment, growth recovery in herbicide-stressed barley plants was studied using various concentrations of BCAAs (10, 50, 100, and 200 mg/L). Increasing BCAA concentration in growth media significantly increased the biomass of herbicide-stressed barley seedlings, but had no significant effect on non-stressed plants. Further, BCAAs (100 mg/L) significantly down-regulated ROS and consequently antioxidant enzyme levels in herbicide-stressed plants. Our results showed that exogenous application of BCAAs could reverse the inhibitory effects of ZJ0273 by restoring protein biosynthesis in barley seedlings.

BACKGROUND Cost‐effective treatment of wastewater remains a challenge for the petroleum industry. In this study, turf soil (R1) was used as a support material in a mesophilic up‐flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor for the treatment of petroleum wastewater. RESULTS At a high organic loading rate (11 kg COD/m3 d), turf soil as a support material reduced COD (91.7%) more efficiently and produced more biogas (1.5 m3/m3 d) in comparison with the no support material control (R0) (89.4% and 0.4 m3/m3 d). Higher percentages of large granular sludge (≥0.6 mm) were formed in the turf soil‐supported UASB reactor (R1), which exhibited better settling, structural resilience and higher biological activity. The rough surface and porous structure of turf soil provided a favorable environment for microbial diversity and habitat. Filamentous bacterial communities putatively promoted anaerobic granular sludge formation and enhanced biodegradation of petroleum organics, particularly alkanes and organic compounds with fewer than 17 carbons. The high content of humic substances promoted the anaerobic degradation of organics, and both humic acid and fulvic acid improved alkaline pH tolerance. CONCLUSION Use of turf soil enhanced the performance of the UASB system, relative to the control, by shortening the time required to reach stable operation through faster biological community development and improved sludge granulation. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry
