Mixed infections of insect larvae with different baculoviruses are occasionally found. They are of interest from an evolutionary as well as from a practical point of view when baculoviruses are applied as biocontrol agents. Here, we report mixed-infection studies of neonate larvae of the common cutworm, Agrotis segetum, with two baculoviruses, Agrotis segetum nucleopolyhedrovirus B (AgseNPV-B) and Agrotis segetum granulovirus (AgseGV). By applying quantitative PCR (qPCR) analysis, coinfections of individual larvae were demonstrated, and occlusion body (OB) production within singly infected and coinfected larvae was determined in individual larvae. Mixtures of viruses did not lead to changes in mortality rates compared with rates of singlevirus treatments, indicating an independent action within host larvae under our experimental conditions. AgseNPV-B-infected larvae showed an increase in OB production during 2 weeks of infection, whereas the number of AgseGV OBs did not change from the first week to the second week. Fewer OBs of both viruses were produced in coinfections than in singly infected larvae, suggesting a competition of the two viruses for larval resources. Hence, no functional or economic advantage could be inferred from larval mortality and OB production from mixed infections of A. segetum larvae with AgseNPV-B and AgseGV.A large number of baculoviruses isolated from the larvae of species of the insect orders Lepidoptera, Diptera, and Hymenoptera have been described (1). According to their occlusion body (OB) morphology, baculoviruses are distinguished into two morphological groups: the granuloviruses (GVs) with a single virion in an ovocylindrical OB (granule) and the nucleopolyhedroviruses (NPVs) with a few to many virions in a polyhedral OB (polyhedron) (2). Taxonomically, the Baculoviridae family is subdivided into four genera, the Alpha-, Beta-, Gamma-, and Deltabaculovirus genera (2, 3). Alpha-and betabaculoviruses comprise lepidopteran-specific NPVs and GVs, respectively. Many lepidopteran species are susceptible to baculoviruses from different species. Even simultaneous infections, so-called coinfections or mixed infections, of two NPVs (4), two GVs (5), and NPVs and GVs (6, 7) have been observed.Larvae of the turnip moth, Agrotis segetum (Denis & Schiffermüller) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), so-called common cutworms, are important agricultural pests (8). ResumenLos baculovirus son virus patógenos de insectos ampliamente empleados a nivel mundial como bioinsecticidas para el control de diferentes plagas de importancia agrícola y más recientemente como vectores de expresión de proteínas y vectores para terapia génica. Una de sus características principales es su alta especificidad de hospedero que incluye un rango muy estrecho de especies de insectos, que a menudo pertenecen a la misma familia. Sin embargo, es necesario entender los mecanismos involucrados en la definición del rango de hospederos de los baculovirus con el fin de evaluar la seguridad e inocuidad de su uso y determinar la posibilidad de mejorar sus propiedades para aplicaciones biotecnológicas mediante la construcción de baculovirus recombinantes con diferentes rangos de hospederos. En el presente artículo se revisarán los principales mecanismos comprendidos en la definición del rango de hospederos de los baculovirus, dentro de los que se destacan la especificidad para entrar en las células, la posibilidad de replicación del genoma viral, el control de los procesos bioquímicos y moleculares del insecto y las interacciones virus-hospedero que regulan la multiplicación del agente infeccioso, así como las perspectivas de la aplicación de este conocimiento.Palabras clave: infección viral, rango de hospederos, evolución, resistencia. AbstractBaculoviruses are insect pathogenic viruses widely used as bioinsecticides for controlling of several agricultural important pests and more recently as protein expression vectors and gene therapy vectors. One of its main characteristics is its high host-specificity including a very narrow range of insect species, which often belong to the same family. However, to understand the mechanisms involved in the definition of baculoviruses host range is necessary in order to assess the security and safety of its use and to determine the possibility of improving their properties for biotechnological applications through the construction of recombinant baculovirus with different host ranges. In the present article the main mechanisms involved in baculoviruses host range as specificity for entering into the host cells, the possibility of viral genome replication, the control of biochemical and molecular insect processes and the interactions virus-host regulating the multiplication of the infectious agent, and the prospects of applying this knowledge will be reviewed.

Nested PCR amplification of a Spodoptera litura nucleopolyhedrovirus (SpltNPV) lef-8 gene fragment was performed on egg masses and larvae of S. litura, and resulted in detection of a latent SpltNPV in 20.0% of "healthy" laboratory stock samples, and in 22.6% of samples collected at different periods and in remote places in Kagoshima Prefecture. The PCR product sequences showed 99% similarity to the published lef-8 sequence of SpltNPV, confirming that the amplification products were derived from SpltNPV. Further, cross-inoculation of laboratory stock S. litura larvae with Mythimna separata NPV (MyseNPV) activated the latent virus, which provoked a change in the virulence of MyseNPV samples collected from cadavers of S. litura. Our data suggest that caution should be taken when using S. litura as a host to produce heterologous NPVs.
