Comparative study on skin protection activity of polyphenol-rich extract and polysaccharide-rich extract from Sargassum vachellianum

Abstract: Seaweed polyphenols and polysaccharide plays a broad range of biological activity. The objective of the present study was to study and compare the skin protection activity of fucoidan rich polysaccharide extract (SPS) and polyphenol-rich extract (SPP) from the seaweed Sargassum vachellianum. The skin protection activity was analyzed based on their ability to scavenge free radicals such as hydrogen peroxide and hydroxyl radicals, UV absorption potential, tyrosinase inhibition, moisture preservation, and antibac… Show more

“…The photoprotective activity of polysaccharides rich extract from brown seaweeds ( Hizikia fusiforme, Sargassum fusiforme, Sargassum vachellianum, and Ecklonia maxima ) was investigated and monosaccharide analysis showed that most of its rich extract contains sulfate group and a high amount of fucose (43.20 to 53.53 %) ( Table 2 ). In addition, it was found that fucose-containing sulfated polysaccharides possessed various bioactivities and most of the polysaccharides rich extract were able to inhibit ROS production and down regulated MMP expression (especially MMP-1) [ 21 , 45 , 46 , 47 , 48 , 49 ]. This suggests that the anti-photoaging activity of polysaccharides rich extract from brown seaweeds was mainly mediated through antioxidant and MMP inhibitory activity.…”

“…Therefore, bioactive compounds from seaweeds ( Figure 1 and Figure 2 ) have attracted great interest and are known for promoting distinct functional activities of interest for the development of anti-photoaging products. They exhibit great ability in targeting several key players linked to anti-photoaging properties such as radical scavenging activity, strong UV absorption, inhibit cell death, MMP-1, and other activities [ 14 , 21 ]. This review focused on the anti-photoaging potential of seaweed-derived bioactive compounds and extracts.…”

“…Production of high-quality purified fucoidans is urgently required to clarify the relationships between chemical structure and the various bioactivities attributed to fucoidans, eliminating any interference from contaminants. However, it was observed in some cases that crude extracts and presence of co-extracted contaminants, especially polyphenolic phlorotannins, have advantageous cosmeceutical effects due to their powerful anti-oxidant activity [203,204].…”

“…SPS showed considerable inhibition of tyrosinase (51.21%) and had better moisture absorption (52.1%) and retention (63.24%) abilities than SPP. 113 (4Z,9Z)-4-Methyl- 1,2,6,8-tetraazacycloundeca-4,9-diene-3,7,11-trione 164 is an eleven-membered macrocyclic hydrazide detected in S. vachellianum collected in the South China Sea (Fig. 10).…”
