Comparative Study on Isolation Calls Emitted from Hamster Pups.

Abstract: Waveforms of isolation calls emitted from hamster pups, which were Syrian hamsters, Djungarian hamsters, and Chinese hamsters, were compared in a basic study on improving reproduction by decrease of cannibalism, because it was reported that maternal behavior was induced by isolation calls in rodents. Isolation calls of hamster pups, isolated from their mother and receiving cold stress, were collected by Real-Time Spectrogram (RTS), and calculated to spectrograms and power spectra by SIGNAL. Isolation calls con… Show more

“…Most of the calls were emitted immediately after birth and their number decreased on subsequent days. This is consistent with other studies (Hashimoto et al, 2001b(Hashimoto et al, , 2004. Juvenile golden hamsters produce the strongest ADVs when they produce the weakest USVs.…”

“…The isolation-induced USV calls of yellow steppe lemmings emerged since 1 st day of pup life. In other rodents (gerbils, mice, California mice, voles, rats, hamsters), the isolation-induced USV calls emerge since 1 st -3 th day of life, depending on the species [26,46,104,106,[113][114][115][116][117][118][119][120][121][122][123][124], for exclusion of fat-tailed gerbils, in which the isolation-induced USV calls emerge only since 5 th day of life [39].…”

“…Variations in the sounds of these vocalizations have been associated with handling, cold temperatures, isolation, and various social factors (Blumberg et al, 1992; Shair et al, 1997; Branchi et al, 2001; Hahn and Lavooy, 2005). In addition to retrieval, vocalizations may also elicit maternal consumption of pup excretions during anogenital licking (Brouette-Lahlou et al, 1992) and may directly stimulate prolactin secretions in dams, although some controversy exists (Terkel et al, 1979; Stern et al, 1984; Hashimoto et al, 2001). In this context, crying is often viewed as a motivated behavior.…”
