Comparative study of various correlations in estimating hourly diffuse fraction of global solar radiation

Abstract:Global solar radiation is generally measured on a horizontal surface, whereas the maximum amount of incident solar radiation is measured on an inclined surface. Over the last decade, a number of models were proposed for predicting solar radiation on inclined surfaces. These models have various scopes; applicability to specific surfaces, the requirement for special measuring equipment, or limitations in scope. To find the most suitable model for a given location the hourly outputs predicted by available models are compared with the field measurements of the given location. The main objective of this study is to review on the estimation of the most accurate model or models for estimating solar radiation components for a selected location, by testing various models available in the literature. To increase the amount of incident solar radiation on photovoltaic (PV) panels, the PV panels are mounted on tilted surfaces. This article also provides an up-to-date status of different optimum tilt angles that have been determined in various countries.

Design and simulation of solar energy installations need hourly data of diffuse and beam radiation components for assessing the dynamic behavior of those systems. However, the most widely available data is the global solar radiation. Whereas, diffuse and beam data are not readily affordable. Thus, numerous empirical models of correlations were developed at different sites in the world to predict the required radiation components. In the present paper, an hourly correlation expressed in a third-degree polynomial relating the diffuse fraction with the clearness index was developed based on field measurements of global and diffuse solar radiations in Baghdad city (33.33 o N), Iraq. The validation and accuracy of the developed correlation was evaluated using six widely used statistical parameters. Among these parameters, the values of linear coefficient of correlation, mean percentage error and root mean square error were found to be 0.885, 6.24% and 8.0% respectively which indicates good performance. In addition, eight different empirical diffuse models for various sites were chosen from the literature for statistical comparison with the developed correlation in this study. The best model was that of South America at site latitude 23.56 o S with mean percentage error 16% and root mean square error 11.5% which shows the largest agreement. A computer program was established for generating the necessary data for developing the required correlation and also for calculating the essential statistical evaluations and comparisons in the present work.

In order to grasp the significance of the work accomplished by the author, it is necessary to keep abreast of the present developments in this field. The research work reported in the paper is an attempt to get knowledge to assess the solar energy potential for practical and efficient utilization in India. Our work is centered on estimating realistic values of solar (global and diffuse) radiation on horizontal and tilted surfaces using measured meteorological data and geographical and geometrical parameters for India.
