Comparative Study of Thermal-Oxidative Aging and Salt Solution Aging on Bitumen Performance

Abstract: The aging of bitumen is detrimental to the durability and service life of asphalt pavement. Previous studies found that bitumen was suspected to be aged by not only thermal oxidation but also solution immersion. This research aims to compare the effect of thermal-oxidative aging and salt solution aging on bitumen performance. For this purpose, a thin film oven test (TFOT) and pressure aging vessel aging (PAV) were selected as thermal-oxidative aging, and 10% NaCl aging and 10% CaCl2 aging were selected as salt… Show more

“…The service temperature limit of bitumen depends on the minimum temperature that bitumen satisfies the demand of m ≥ 0.3 and S ≤ 300 MPa [ 34 , 35 ]. As seen in Figure 8 , all binders complied with a −18 °C limited temperature, but did not conform to a −24 °C limited temperature.…”

“…Sodium chloride solution at 10 wt% is the concentration of salt that is commonly found on road pavements as a result of winter maintenance operations ( 31 , 32 ); the corresponding solution was created in the laboratory by mixing salt solid and distilled water with a ratio of 1:9. The testing samples were then submerged in water inside a plastic box filled with the prepared solution and were put in a thermostatically controlled cabinet at 0°C.…”
