Comparative study of the effects of artemether and artesunate on juvenile and adult Schistosoma mansoni in experimentally infected mice

Abstract: Artemether and artesunate, derivatives of the antimalarial artemisinin, also exhibit antischistosomal properties. There is a need to assess comparatively the activity of both compounds against different developmental stages of schistosome parasites. Since artemisinin derivatives will be increasingly used to treat malaria, it is important to study the effects of 'i-day monotherapy regimens on schistosome infections. We carried out experiments with mice, infected with juvenile or adult Schistosoma mansoni, and t… Show more

“…12 Extensive tegumental erosions were described in S. mansoni. 13 These detrimental effects are quite similar to the effects seen in the present experiment. The extensive damage on the tegument is typical of anthelmintic activity described for various drugs.…”

“…Furthermore, the effect on schistosomulae has been confirmed by studies in animal models (Xiao & Catto, 1989;Xiao et al, 1995;Utzinger et al, 2002). However, these studies show that the efficacy of ARS derivatives may be low when used in monotherapy.…”
