Comparative Study of Stress-Strain Characteristic of Peat Soil

Abstract: Abstract. This paper shows the stress-strain behavior of peat from the perspective of geotechnical engineering based on laboratory test. Stress happens when a load applied to a certain specimen and deformed the specimen while strain is the response from applied stress on a specimen. Peat is known as an ultimate soft soil in engineering terms because it has low shear strength and compressibility. This research is concerned about the stress-strain behavior of hemic peat. The undisturbed samples were collected at… Show more

“…This location is well known as a peat deposit area based on some of problematic area in Malaysia that deals with peat soil, and has well-reported soil index and strength characteristics published in recent years [21,22]. Parit Sulong, Batu Pahat, Johor is another location of peat soil deposit that was recently explored in the West Coast of Peninsular Malaysia [23]. The third and final location in Beaufort, Sabah peat is a newly discovered site, since there is no single study conducted for Sabah peat soil from an engineering perspectivehence making it a pioneering study in conducting peat soil research for Sabah region.…”

“…Other crops such as pineapples, corn, cassava is often typically growing in micro-peat [20]. Micro-peats are those soils that have an organic matter more than 65% or less than 35% of the mineral content and highly porous with a surface area of more than 200 m 2 /g [21,22].…”
