Comparative Study of Single and Multiple Pollutants System Using Ti–Fe Chitosan LDH Adsorbent with High Performance in Wastewater Treatment

Abstract: Ti–Fe chitosan (LDH) nanoparticles with nitrate intercalated anions as a novel adsorbent were produced via milling technique. The synthesized LDH was characterized by XRD, FT-IR, BET surface area, zeta potential, FESEM, and HRTEM. The adsorption capability of novel catalyst was under study with regard to several pollutants in the wastewater (phosphate, cadmium, and benzoquinone) in single and multiple solutions. Ti–Fe chitosan LDH demonstrated high activity toward cadmium and benzoquinone and succeeded to remo… Show more

“…Chitosan has also been tested due to the possibility to adsorb large amounts of metal ions. Indeed, TiFe LDHs modified with chitosan can exhibit high removal capacities (close to 100%) for cadmium and phosphate in mono-and multiplepollutant solutions (Mahmoud et al 2017). The use of hierarchical SiO 2 @LDHs on SiO 2 spheres has been studied by Yang et al (2017) to remove uranium (U(VI)) from aqueous solution.…”

“…Other synthesis methods such as the ball milling (Mahmoud et al 2017) or the ethanol-water mediated solvothermal method (Li et al 2016) are also interesting alternatives to obtain materials with high surface areas (around 150 m².g -1 ). Based on the existing literature, the adsorption of aqueous pollutants on LDHs and their derived materials reveals to be a promising alternative.…”

“…These materials, with anions compensating for the lamellae, can be used as adsorbents for anionic compounds, including both inorganic [ 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 ] and organic [ 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 ] compounds, and applied to several fields, such as drug delivery [ 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 ] and effluent and water treatments [ 19 , 20 , 21 ]. However, they are not efficient for the adsorption of cations.…”

“…These layered inorganics are widely used in the fields of catalysts, adsorbents, heat stabilizers, flame retardants, etc. (Choudary et al 2002;Pereira et al 2009;Mahmoud et al 2017). As opposed to traditional inorganics and halogenated flame retardants, LDHs not only exhibit high flame-retardant efficiency, but are also non-toxic, halogen-free, and suppress smoke formation.…”
