Objetivo: identificar os melhores métodos para rastreio pré-natal para a prevenção de infecção perinatal por Streptococcus do Grupo B em gestantes. Métodos: revisão integrativa, desenvolvida nas bases de dados LILACS, PubMed e CINAHL, e nas bibliotecas virtuais SciELO e BVS, através do cruzamento das palavras “Streptococcus do Grupo B”, “Gestantes” e “Rastreamento”. A busca foi feita em março de 2024, considerando apenas a captura de artigos científicos publicados nos últimos 10 anos, com dados primários, em inglês, português e/ou espanhol, disponíveis na íntegra. A busca foi realizada com dois pesquisadores independentes, e a apresentação dos dados considerou o título do artigo, nome do periódico, autores, ano de publicação, país, tipo de estudo, objetivo, amostra, resultados e nível de evidência. Resultados: Dos 535 trabalhos identificados, apenas 14 artigos compuseram a amostra, focando em métodos diagnósticos moleculares e sua eficácia, custo, e facilidade de uso para triagem de estreptococos do grupo b. Os resultados sugerem que PCR em tempo real e outros métodos moleculares rápidos são superiores ao padrão-ouro de cultura bacteriana em termos de rapidez e precisão. Conclusão: a integração dos métodos diagnósticos avançados pode aprimorar significativamente as estratégias de prevenção da transmissão vertical da bactéria. Características socioculturais e fatores de risco das populações rastreadas devem ser consideradas para um manejo e tratamento mais específicos.

Infectious diseases (IDs) are a leading cause of death. The diversity and adaptability of microbes represent a continuing risk to health. Combining vision with passion, our transdisciplinary medical research team has been focussing its work on the better management of infectious diseases for saving human lives over the past five decades through medical discoveries and innovations that helped change the practice of medicine. The team used a multiple-faceted and integrated approach to control infectious diseases through fundamental discoveries and by developing innovative prevention tools and rapid molecular diagnostic tests to fulfill the various unmet needs of patients and health professionals in the field of ID. In this article, as objectives, we put in context two main research areas of ID management: innovative infection prevention that is woman-controlled, and the rapid molecular diagnosis of infection and resistance. We also explain how our transdisciplinary approach encompassing specialists from diverse fields ranging from biology to engineering was instrumental in achieving success. Furthermore, we discuss our vision of the future for translational research to better tackle IDs.

Background Group B Streptococcal (GBS) infection is the primary agent of neonatal morbidity and mortality. Rapid and simple methods to detect GBS are Xpert GBS and GBS LB assays based on real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR). However, since the diagnostic accuracy of the two techniques in diagnosing GBS remains unclear, we designed this study to appraise the diagnostic accuracy of the aforementioned. Methods A systematic search of all literature published before July 16, 2020 was conducted using Embase, PubMed, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library. The study quality was evaluated through Review Manager 5.3. Accordingly, data extracted in the included studies were analyzed using Meta-DiSc 1.4 and Stata 12.0 software. The diagnosis odds ratio (DOR) and bivariate boxplot were utilized to evaluate the heterogeneity. Publication bias was appraised by using Deeks’ funnel plot. Results A total of 13 studies were adopted and only 19 sets of data met the criteria. The sensitivity and specificity of Xpert GBS were 0.91 (95% CI 0.89–0.92) and 0.93 (95% CI 0.92–0.94). The area under the curve (AUC) was 0.9806. The sensitivity and specificity results of Xpert GBS LB were 0.96 (95% CI 0.95–0.98) and 0.94 (95% CI 0.92–0.95), respectively. The AUC was 0.9950. No publication bias was found. Conclusions The Xpert GBS and GBS LB assays are valuable alternative methods with high sensitivity and specificity. However, determining whether they can be used as clinical diagnostic standards for GBS is essential for the future.
