Comparative study of putative 9-cis-epoxycarotenoid dioxygenase and abscisic acid accumulation in the responses of Sunki mandarin and Rangpur lime to water deficit

Abstract: Abscisic acid is a plant hormone that participates in essential plant physiological processes, especially during adaptation to many environmental stresses, such as water deficit. The relationship between ABA accumulation and the expression of putative carotenoid cleavage dioxygenase (CCD) genes was investigated in the pot-cultivated leaves and roots of the 'Rangpur' lime and 'Sunki Maravilha' mandarin plants. Transpiration, stomatal resistance and leaf growth were evaluated when these genotypes were subjected … Show more

“…RL and SM rootstocks were selected based on previous studies indicating their different behaviors when subjected to drought stress2728. The reciprocal graft combinations (SM/RL and RL/SM), as well as two commercial scions were used–Valencia orange (VO) and Tahiti acid lime (TAL)–which were grafted onto SM and RL rootstocks, were used to further investigate scion/rootstock interactions.…”

“…Under severe drought, SM scions grafted onto RL exhibited leaf ABA levels approximately 2.5-fold higher than ungrafted RL. ABA has been frequently reported to be produced in roots and to translocate into leaves, especially under drought conditions2027. However, other studies have shown that ABA can also be produced in shoots and/or guard cells, protecting plants from water loss by inducing stomatal closure3637383940.…”

“…Rangpur lime and ‘Sunki Maravilha’ were selected because in a previous study, these cultivars have been shown to differ in their use of available soil water, ABA accumulation and expression of ABA biosynthesis genes, suggesting that they use different systems to adapt to water restriction [17]. …”

“…Most citrus rootstocks are intolerant to drought, and therefore, efforts have been made to improve their drought tolerance (Gong and Liu, 2013). The relationship between ABA accumulation and expression of putative NCEDs in vegetative and reproductive tissues of drought-stressed mandarins has been investigated, and a correlation between the expression of the orthologs of NCED2, 3, and 5 and the pattern of ABA accumulation has been observed in their leaves and roots (Agustí et al, 2007;Neves et al, 2013). The overexpression of citrus NCED5 was also shown to be correlated with the ABA levels in ripening fruits (Agustí et al, 2007).…”
