Comparative Study of Potential Applications of Graphene, MoS2, and Other Two-Dimensional Materials in Energy Devices, Sensors, and Related Areas

Abstract: Novel properties of graphene have been well documented, whereas the importance of nanosheets of MoS2 and other chalcogenides is increasingly being recognized over the last two to three years. Borocarbonitrides, BxCyNz, with insulating BN and conducting graphene on either side are new materials whose properties have been attracting attention. These two-dimensional (2D) materials contain certain common features. Thus, graphene, MoS2, and borocarbonitrides have all been used in supercapacitor applications, oxygen… Show more

“…As a result, intensive research efforts have been made to characterize graphene and graphene-based materials in supercapacitors applications [1,[3][4][5]. Specific capacitance beyond 200 F.g À1 has been achieved in both aqueous and organic electrolytes [4,[6][7][8][9], which is similar or even better to many carbon materials like porous activated carbon [10]. However, the low density of graphene often comes with a low volumetric capacitance (F. cm…”

“…So far, many review articles on 2D materials discussing their novel physical, electronic properties, recent developments in synthesis techniques and their applications in electronics, optoelectronics, energy conversion and storage, gas storage, etc., have been published [67,[70][71][72][73][74][75]. During the past few years, there have been some comprehensive reviews on gas sensors based on graphene and graphene related materials with primary focus on the properties for gas sensing, sensing mechanisms, modifications of graphene for enhanced sensing features, etc.…”

“…Gas-phase reaction of BCl 3 (BBr 3 ) with NH 3 and CH 4 also yields BCN [90]. BCNs possess fascinating properties [13,86], such as high surface areas, good uptake of CO 2 and application in energy devices. An important feature of these materials is that by varying the carbon content, one can vary the electronic structure as well as properties.…”

“…The van der Waals heterostructures are found to exhibit unusual properties and phenomena [9][10][11][12]. Furthermore, hybrids of graphene and 2D inorganic analogues are reported to exhibit novel and enhanced properties owing to synergy [13]. In this chapter, we present the synthesis, characterisation, properties and applications of 2D layered inorganic materials which include TMDs, BN, BCN and related materials.…”
