Comparative study of Partial Discharge emulators for the calibration of Free-Space radiometric measurements

Abstract: Partial discharge is measured simultaneously using free-space radiometry (FSR) and a galvanic contact measurement technique based on the IEC 60270 standard. Several types of PD (Partial Discharge) sources are specially constructed: two internal PD emulators and an emulator of the floating-electrode type. The excitation applied to the source is AC and the radiated signal is captured using a wideband biconical antenna. The calibration of PD sources is demonstrated. Effective radiated power of the PD source using… Show more

“…PD is generated by applying high voltage to the artificial PD sources. The radiometric measurements are performed by using a biconical antenna connected to a 4 GHz, 20 GSa/s, digital sampling oscilloscope (DSO) [16]. The antenna frequency range is 20 MHz to 1 GHz, and its nominal input impedance is 50 Ohms.…”

“…The output of the HV power source is connected to the lower electrode and the upper electrode is connected to earth. When the electric field is sufficiently large, corona discharge originates from the floating electrode [17,18]. The acrylic tube PD emulator is shown in Figure 8.…”

“…PD is generated by applying a high voltage (AC or DC) to the artificial PD sources; a floating electrode emulator, an acrylic tube emulator, an acrylic tube emulator immersed in transformer oil, and an epoxy dielectric emulator. The radiometric measurements were made using a vertically polarized biconical antenna connected to a 4 GHz, 20 GSa/s, digital sampling oscilloscope (DSO) [5]. The floating electrode emulator, acrylic tube emulator, and epoxy dielectric emulator are shown in Figure 3.…”
