Comparative study of optical phonons in the rhombohedrally distorted perovskitesLaAlO3andLaMnO3<

Abstract: The Raman and infrared phonons of isostructural rhombohedral LaMnO 3 and LaAlO 3 are studied at room temperature. The experimental spectra are compared with the prediction of lattice-dynamical calculations and the lines observed are assigned to definite atomic vibrations. It is shown that the Raman mode of A 1g symmetry in LaAlO 3 and LaMnO 3 ͑at 123 cm Ϫ1 and 236 cm Ϫ1 , respectively͒ involves atomic motions that cause the rhombohedral distortion, i.e., it is a ''soft'' mode, and its position could be used as… Show more

“…4. LaCoO 3 : The spectra of LaCoO 3 are, however, somewhat surprising since (i) they are not similar to the spectra of isostructural rhombohedral LaMnO 3+d [9,10,21,22], La 1-x A x MnO 3 [9,10], and LaAlO 3 [22], (ii) due to the neutron-diffraction data the sample should have a rhombohedral symmetry D d . Note that high-frequency lines, with large intensity in LaCoO 3 even at room temperature, are not observed in the spectra of isostructural compounds.…”

“…However, no sharp peaks appear when the sample enters FM state in the film on STO. In addition, because the E g modes always appear in rhombohedral symmetric structure 43,47 , the appearance of these sharp peaks maybe indicate a structure transition from orthorhombic lattice to rhombohedron. These sharp peaks in the 400 to 450 cm −1 range at low temperatures also appears in bulk samples with composition of about 0.33 41 .…”

“…a film = a substrate b film = b substrate This constraint is quite strong since it is associated with bond elongation, i.e. the most energetic vibrational modes 11 . It thus relaxes slowly (not before 250 u.c., 1000Å, on a STO substrate 5 ).…”
