Comparative Study of Maxillary Growth in Patients With Unilateral Cleft Treated With and Without Pre-Surgical Orthopedics

Abstract: Compare the maxillary growth of patients with Unilateral Cleft treated with pre-surgical Functional Maxillary Orthopedic (FMO) and that of who underwent a surgical procedure with no previous use of appliances. Prospective study, the patients were divided into 2 groups. G1, was composed of 12 patients who received no pre-surgical intervention and cheilorhinoplasty at 6 months of age and G2, included 12 patients treated using Pre-Surgical Funtional Maxilary Orthopedic; they underwent no surgery during the study… Show more

“…Both, surgery and orthopedics procedures allowed the closure of the cleft at different sites. 38 Hood et al 36 analyzed unilateral cleft lip (UCL) and UCL/P before primary surgery and compare them with noncleft control group using 3dimensional stereophotogrammetry (C3D) system. Facial parameters, such as nostril dimensions, alar wing angulation, CA, and alar base to corner of mouth dimension; alar base width; and soft tissue defect in nose and the lip and philtrum length bordering the cleft, but not maxillary arch parameters.…”

“…Studies have analyzed the maxillary arch and soft tissue features morphology of children with cleft lip and palate. [36][37][38] Agell Sogbe et al 38 compared patients with UCL/P who underwent presurgical orthopedics with UCL/P with no presurgical intervention and cheilorhinoplasty. The cleft distance and maxillary width (anterior, medium, and posterior) were measured, but not facial parameters.…”
