Comparative study of hematological and blood chemistry of Persian sturgeon (Asipencer persicus) exposed to two common anticoagulants

Abstract: The effects of heparin and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) on plasma biochemistry and hematological parameters in Asipencer persicus were studied. Differences in ALT and ALP activity were found between serum and heparinized plasma (P<0.05). AST activity in EDTA treated samples increased (P<0.05) compared to its values in serum. On the contrary, ALP activity showed a significant decrease compared to its serum level (P<0.05). Samples collected with EDTA showed an increase in haematocrit, mean cor… Show more

“…The fact that citrate appeared to cause anisonucleosis, lysis and karyolysis may suggest its unsuitability for G. argenteus blood treatment (Figure 1a). K 2 EDTA has been reported in several studies to induce erythrocyte haemolysis, karyolysis, anisonucleosis, anisocytosis, cell swelling and elevation of haematocrit values, among other effects (Ahmed & Maqbool, 2014; Farias et al ., 2016; Gholipourkanani, Ranjdoost, Jafaryan, & Yelghi, 2018; Lataretu, 2013; Maqbool, Ahmed, & Sheikh, 2013; Walencik & Witeska, 2007; Witeska & Wargocka, 2011). Except for karyolysis and lysis, most conditions were not observed in K 2 EDTA‐treated erythrocytes in this study (Clark et al ., 1979; Ishikawa et al ., 2010; Lataretu, 2013; Tavares‐Dias & Sandrim, 1998).…”

“…Blood parameters play a crucial role in animals' circulatory systems, serving essential functions such as material transport, physiological regulation, and defense mechanisms [12]. They act as parameters of species characteristics and physiological status, reflecting animal health and nutritional levels [13], and provide valuable insights for research in animal reproductive physiology and pathology.…”
