Background: Acne vulgaris is a chronic skin disease which can present as non-inflammatory lesions, inflammatory lesions, or a mixture of both, resulting in distressing and difficult to treat scars. The objective of this study is to compare the efficacy of fractional carbon dioxide (CO2) laser technique (FCLT) versus derma roller therapy (DT) with respect to post-acne scars and to study their respective side effects.Methods: A total of 200 patients of post acne scars were enrolled for this study from the outpatient Department of Dermatology, Venereology and Leprology, Navodaya Medical College Hospital and Research Centre, Raichur. The patients were randomly allocated into two groups of 100 patients each in which one group was treated with derma roller therapy and the other group was treated with fractional CO2 laser every 4 weeks over a period of 24 weeks each.Results: In the derma roller group, 89 patients completed the treatment with 11 drop out cases. The percentage reduction in the mean objective scores was found to be 37.63%. In the fractional CO2 laser group, 93 patients completed the treatment with 7 drop out cases. The percentage reduction in mean objective scores was found to be 41.22%.Conclusions: Comparing the efficacy of derma roller therapy and fractional CO2laser resurfacing method in the treatment of post acne scars, both the modalities were found to be equally efficacious.

Background: Acne vulgaris is a chronic skin disease caused due to blockage and/or inflammation of pilosebaceous units in which lesions present as non-inflammatory, inflammatory or mixture of both. The inflammatory type, often results in distressing scars for which dermaroller therapy and fractional CO2 laser have shown to be effective treatment modalities. Material and Methods: This is a prospective, descriptive and hospital based study. Total of 140 cases were enrolled in study carried out for 1 year in the Department of Dermatology at tertiary health centre and medical college with subsequent follow up of up to six months. Patients with acne scars under the groupings of a score > 3 points on Global Acne Scarring Classification Scale were enrolled. Results: Out of 140 patients, (70 -dermaroller group, 70 -CO2 laser group) completed treatment and follow-up. Dermaroller therap results indicated that the baseline was 23.43±6.32 and reduced to 13.23±3.65 after the treatment. This difference was found to be statistically highly significant with p value as <0.0001. On the other hand, the baseline and follow up after fractional CO2 laser therapy was evaluated and the results indicated that the mean objective score before treatment was 23.95±6.85 and after treatment, it was 16.34±4.75. This difference was statistically highly significant p value <0.0001. Conclusion:On comparing the efficacy of dermaroller therapy and fractional CO2 laser in the treatment of post-acne scars, both were found to be efficacious while fractional CO2 laser being more effective in treating severe acne scars than dermaroller therapy.

Objective: To compare the effectiveness of carbon dioxide fractional laser with micro needling in acne scarring. Study Design: Quasi experimental study. Place and Duration of Study: Department of Dermatology, Pak Emirates Military Hospital Rawalpindi, from Jun 2019 to Mar 2020. Methodology: Overall 40 patients with acne scars assessed by consultant dermatologist were made part of study. The patients were divided into two treatment groups through lottery method. Group A, was managed by micro needling technique, while Group B was managed by carbon dioxide fractional laser, each to be done monthly for a total of three sessions. The response was measured by the dermatologist and patients in both the groups. The side effects were also compared in both the groups. Results: Out of 40 patients with acne scars included in study, 17 (42.5%) underwent micro-needling while 23 (57.5%) underwent carbon dioxide fractional laser treatment after randomization. Thirty (75%) patients were female while 10 (25%) were male. The patients with acne scars responded better in carbon dioxide fractional laser group as compared to micro needling in opinion of dermatologists (p-value=0.01) and also patients themselves (p-value=0.03). Side effects were significantly higher in carbon dioxide fractional laser group as compared to micro needling (p-value=0.02). Conclusion: Significant number of patients respond well to carbon dioxide fractional laser treatment and the response included both expert opinion and patients own opinion, but adverse effects were seen more in same group. Therefore, better response but at the cost of more adverse effects was noted.
