Comparative study of energy dissipation capacity of steel and glass fibre-reinforced polymer frames with bonded sleeve connections

Abstract: This paper presents a comparative study on the energy dissipation capacity of one glass fibre-reinforced polymer frame with bonded sleeve connection and steel frames with bolted endplate connections. Experimentally measured moment-rotation behaviour of a typical bonded sleeve connection was employed to develop the joint model for the glass fibre-reinforced polymer frame. In order to reduce the effect of the different beam size on the overall frame behaviour, the size of the steel profiles was selected to be eq… Show more

“…The facades and the horizontal elements are implemented by adopting the “Wall E+ ®® construction system”, innovative building system made with pultruded GFRP blocks, specifically designed to be adapted to the different required geometry allowing a wide range of possibilities in the openings setting, characterised by excellent thermal and acoustic insolation properties and conceived in line with sustainability principles [ 21 ]. Concrete is poured onto the prefabricated elements of the deck in order to obtain a rigid slab and to reduce the vibrations of the system.…”

“…For this reason, several studies were carried out to experimentally characterise joints between FRP structural elements, including bolted or riveted solutions comprising FRP or steel connecting elements [ 18 , 19 , 20 ]. These studies, combined with numerical applications, emphasised the importance of an accurate definition of the moment–rotation properties of the joint in order to have a reliable prediction of the frame’s mechanical behaviour [ 21 , 22 ]. It also highlighted the need of comparing the mechanical performance of FRP structural elements with serviceability and ultimate limit states to show the suitability of the material for designing purposes [ 23 , 24 ].…”

“…Bolted connection is a common connection method for FRP structures and it has the advantages of economy, convenience of construction, ease to replace, low environmental sensitivity, and low requirements for surface treatment [1][2][3]. However, because FRP material has almost no plastic deformation capacity, the seismic performance of FRP beam-column joints is poor [4][5]. Garl Edward Grigorian [6] studied the energy dissipation with slotted bolted connections(SBCs) and found that it has excellent energy dissipation capacity.…”
