Comparative Study for Performance of Soil Bed Reinforced with Jute and Sisal Geocells as Alternatives to HDPE Geocells

Abstract: This paper presents the performance of soil bed reinforced with jute and sisal geocells compared to HDPE geocells. The bearing pressure-settlement behaviour of the soil bed reinforced with natural geocells, soil bed reinforced with HDPE geocells and of unreinforced soil bed are discussed. The soil bed reinforced with jute cell and sisal cell showed a uniform increase in the settlement with increase in the applied pressure. The soil reinforced with HDPE geocell, however, showed a sudden rise in the settlement a… Show more

“…Natural geotextiles like coir geotextiles along with sand interface offer high-bond resistance, especially at low normal stresses [10]. The use of jute and sisal as geocell reinforcement improved the bearing capacity of soft soil to support footing by increasing its strength and stiffness [11,12]. Moreover, as compared to synthetic geotextiles, jute geotextiles have a higher tensile stiffness and modulus [11].…”

“…As a result, suitable measures are essential to enhance the service life of these fibers. Several treatment methods like bitumen coating, acetylation, treating with sodium hydroxide and hydrogen peroxide are required [12,[14][15][16][17][18]. Hence, the focus of this study is to develop a technique for ground improvement using jute geotextiles treated with a protective layer of alkali-activated binder (AAB).…”

“…The materials are applicable to lightly loaded infrastructures. The paper-based materials were soon replaced by novel polymeric alloy [11], Jute and Sisal [12] to increase the load-carry capacity. Another alternative material is high-density polyethylene (HDPE).…”
