Comparative study between result of temporalis muscle fascia and tragal cartilage perichondrium as a graft material in type 1 tympanoplasty

Abstract:
Background: Leading cause of deafness in India is chronic suppurative otitis media. Most common cause of TM perforation is chronic suppurative otitis media. With this background this study was to compare hearing results, as well as graft takes for commonly preferred reconstruction techniques of the TM (i.e., temporalis fascia vs. cartilage) in tympanoplasty.

Methods: The present study consists… Show more

“…In Kumar's study hearing improvement accounted 50%. 14 Graft infection was observed in 3 cases (6.8%) that responded to antibiotics and no other serious complication was recorded in this study which comparable to study of Shrikrishna, who also encountered infection of graft in one case (3.33%). 5…”

“…Cartilage graft was taken in 43 cases (97.7%) in this study, which is comparable to other studies as listed in table below (Table-III) [1][2][3]7,[10][11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18]. …”

“…14 In contrary, in the study done by Kumar et al, it was concluded that graft uptake rates were better with the tragal cartilage with perichondrium in comparison with temporalis fascia and hearing results were almost equivalent with both techniques. 15 Although the utilization of cartilage as a grafting material in middle ear surgery is not a new concept, a renewed interest for its use has increased exponentially in the last decade. 16 It can be used as an alternative to more traditional grafting materials for tympanic membrane reconstruction or attic wall reconstruction.…”

“…Regular control after tympanomastoidectomy prevents reperforation from Chavan et al, 8 Kumar et al, 9 and Previous research by Tao et al 10 found that temporal graft fascia has more advantages such as being easier to extract, more quantity, relatively transparent, thinner and more flexible, but its elasticity strength as a low tympanic membrane makes it far more susceptible to negative pressure from the middle ear. Based on the background above, this study aims to determine changes in the image of tympanogram and audiogram postoperative tympanomastoidectomy using deep temporalis muscular graft fascia and composite graft.…”
