Comparative study between M. oleifera and aluminum sulfate for water treatment: case study Colombia

Abstract: The world has a water deficit, mostly located in developing countries. For example, in Colombia, water deficit is a major concern and it increases in rural areas, where the rate of accessibility to drinking water is of 33.26% in 2005. Since the 1970s, the most used technology for water purification is the conventional physicochemical process. The most common coagulant used in this process is aluminum sulfate (alum). This study focuses on a comparison between Moringa oleifera seeds and alum for water treatment … Show more

“…The coagulant activity of Moringa oleifera seeds is due to the water-soluble lectin having the flocculation and sedimentation potential. Moringa oleifera seeds show a 90% decrease in turbidity and color of polluted water and a 90–99% decline in the bacterial load [ 129 ]. Moringa oleifera crude, ethanol, and aqueous extracts are used for water treatment and reduction of microbial load in fish, prawn, and shrimp farming [ 98 ].…”

“…Moringa oleifera (kelor) adalah jenis tumbuhan yang banyak digunakan sebagai koagulan alami, baik dalam pengolahan air bersih maupun limbah cair (Shan et al, 2017;Camacho et al, 2017;Salazar Gámez et al, 2015;Dalvand et al, 2016). Beberapa material organik yang telah teruji sebagai koagulan adalah pati (Choy et al, 2014), tannin (Beltrán-Heredia et al, 2011(Barrado-Moreno et al, 2016), kacang-kacangan (Antov et al, 2010Šćiban et al, 2009) dan chitosan (Kumar & Quaff, 2018).…”

“…Goal 6, one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals adopted in 2015 as part of the United Nations 2030 agenda, suggests "ensuring the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all", [8]. As part of the implementation of this goal, we are undertaking investigations on the research of natural coagulants of plant origin, to have scientific data on natural substances of plant origin with coagulant activity; to be able to expand the range of natural coagulants of plant origin and also to contribute to the improvement of water quality for people in rural areas of developing countries [9][10][11]. Our previous work has shown the coagulant activity of aqueous solutions of Arachis hypogaea and Cucumeropsis mannii seed powders in the clarification of surface water samples of initial turbidities 131 NTU, 128,60 NTU, 94 NTU, 91,06 NTU, 89.45 NTU, 41,45 NTU and 32,75 NTU [12][13][14].…”
