Comparative Studies on Leaf Yield, Quality and Economy of Three Cultivars of Betelvine (Piper betle L.) as Influenced by Integrated Nitrogen Management

Abstract: Piper betle L., (family-Piperaceae) commonly known as the betel vine is an important medicinal and recreational plant in Southeast Asia. Betel vine is a dioecious, evergreen, perennial creeper with glossy heart shaped leaves. The present study was executed to identify the suitable integrated nitrogen management on leaf yield, quality and economy of betel vine (Piper betle L.) cultivars in new alluvial zone of West Bengal. The field experiment was conducted at Horticulture Research Station, Mondouri, Bidhan Cha… Show more

“…Ideal conditions for higher leaf production in betel vines include longer vines with shorter internodes, as this configuration allows for more leaves to be produced from each node. Additionally, faster vine growth results in obtaining a greater number of leaves in a shorter time frame [15]. When a stem or leaf node of a betel vine comes into contact with a suitable substrate, it readily forms adventitious roots, aiding in vegetative propagation.…”

“…Transportation, too many middlemen, a lack of grading, price fluctuations, and a lack of financial resources were all issues in marketing. The intensity of pests and illnesses, lack of water, soil quality, and the frequency of rains and winds were all agrobiological issues that limited productivity (Bar et al, 2020). The primary reasons for the low betel leaf output are conventionally handled operations, uned ucated laborer, and inferior planting materials.…”

“…The betel vine, scientifically known as Piper betle L. belongs to the Piperaceae family, has held a unique cultural and economic significance across Asia for centuries (Bar et al, 2020). The origin of betel vine is thought to be Central or Eastern Malayasia (Chattapadhyay and Maity, 1967).…”
