The vegetative anatomy of Elaeocarpus angustifolius Blume, Elaeocarpus tuberculatus Roxb., and Elaeocarpus variabilis Zmarzty were investigated to illustrate anatomical variations. Plant materials were free-hand sectioned using a razor blade and stained with different staining solutions. The maceration technique was used to assess stomatal characteristics. Elaeocarpus leaves have abaxial epidermis with paracytic stomata and curved anticlinal walls in E. angustifolius, straight walls in other two species. Trichomes were absent in E. angustifolius.hav Mesophyll dorsiventral, midvein cortex contains starch grains, and vascular tissues enclosed by thick-walled sclerenchymatous cells. The petioles of all the three species possess unicellular epidermal hairs, collenchymatous hypodermis, and cortex containing druses and crystals, and vascular tissue enclosed by sclerenchymatous fibers. Water-storage cells are absent in petioles of E. angustifolius. Anatomical features of Elaeocarpus stem include epidermal hairs, epidermis covered by thin cuticle, the collenchymatous hypodermis and vascular integrity with entire cylinder enclosed by sclerenchymatous fibers. Pith contains water-storage cells. Starch grains absent in the pith cells of E. tuberculatus. The roots of Elaeocarpus possess unicellular root hairs, cortex 12-14 layered in E. tuberculatus and E. variabilis and 10-12 layerd E. angustifolius, Endodermis O-thickened and pericycle single-layered in all the examined Elaeocarpus species. Vascular bundles are arranged radially. Lignin deposition occurred in stellar region of roots. Water-storage cells present in the stelar regions of E. variabilis.The study revealed significant anatomical differences between the three Elaeocarpus species and most of these anatomical features may be used as markers for the identification of these species. Research Highlights• Comparative anatomy of three south Indian Elaeocarpus was studied.• Leaf mesophyll layers varied in all the Elaeocarpus species.• Crystals was present in petiole of all examined Elaeocarpus species.• Starch grains was absent in stems of E. tubercuatus, but present in E. variabilis.• Water-storage cells observed in stellar region of E. variabilis.

In this study, it is aimed to make anatomical analysis of five different Artemisia L. species (A. absinthium L., A. annua L., A. abrotanum L., A. incana (L.) Druce, A. tournefortiana Rchb.) grown in Turkey and contribute to the definition of this genus, which has some taxonomic problems. The materials for anatomical study were preserved in 70% alcohol. Free hand cross sections were taken using sharp razor blades, stained and mounted in Sartur Reagent and Chloralhydrate (50%) solution. Anatomical structures of the stem and leaf of selected species were examined under the light microscope. Their detailed structures were illustrated with photographs. Results have shown that stem and leaf anatomical features of the Asteraceae family are mostly shared by all species. However, some characters could be considered species-specific. In cross- sections, the stems of all studied species have more or less irregular rounded shapes, but prominent ribs containing collenchyma tissue could be noticed only in A. annua stem. The leaves of A. absinthium and A. incana were covered by glandular and densely T-shaped non--glandular trichomes on both sides however, A. tournefortiana had no hair at all. There were highly apparent secretory canals located in both the stem (next to the endodermal cells) and the leaf (near to xylem) of A. tournefortiana. The anatomical structure of leaves and stems of A. tournefortiana and A. incana growing in Turkey was demonstrated for the first time. Our results revealed that the studied species are anatomically distinguishable from each other and also provided valuable features for better species identification and contribute to the anatomy of the genus Artemisia.

Opuntia is the most diverse and widely distributed drought resistant promising genus of family Cactaceae. The cladodes were utilized to quantify the chemical composition of these plants helpful in lignocellulose conversion and their application towards biofuel production. The present study was aimed to evaluate and compare the taxonomic relationship based on morphology, stem anatomy and palynology of important desert cacti including Opuntia dillenii and Opuntia monacantha. This study also evaluates the potential usefulness of morphological, anatomical and pollen traits using light and scanning electron microscopy. The obtained microcharacters of stem and flowers are considered diagnostic at the generic and specific levels. Some distinguishing morphological features observed were elliptical to obovate cladodes, 1-7 spines per areole and presence of glochidia in O. dillenii. Pollen and stem anatomical characters of the studied taxa are considered highly diagnostic at the generic and species levels. The epidermis has irregular and wavy cells, with straight to sinuate wall pattern and paracytic stomata. Pollen grains appear as pantoporate and prolate spheroidal having reticulate to perforate-reticulate sculpturing while exine semi-tectate to tectate. The taxonomic features studied could be valuable to elaborate and helpful in correctly identification of Opuntia species. The methods of diverse microscopic examination also providing sufficient evidence about the taxonomy of the Opuntia species. Research Highlights• Description and illustration of desert cacti Opuntia.• Morpho-anatomy and palynology were studied with LM and SEM.• Highly variation in taxonomic qualitative and quantitative features.• Systematic significance based on taxonomic characters was presented.
