The purpose of this research is to perform a microstructural characterization of the stabilized spent vanadium pentoxide (V 2 O 5 ) catalyst in the copper smelter slag. The spent V 2 O 5 catalyst (SVC) is a discarded material from a sulfuric acid production plant. The used SVC is a catalyst material supported in SiO 2 . The used copper smelting slag (CSS) was from a copper refining mine. The toxic V 2 O 5 compound present in the SVC was stabilized via pyrometallurgical processing with the CSS in an electric furnace with a CSS/SVC 4:1 ratio at 1250°C to obtain a fused compound. The microstructural and chemical characterization of the CSS, SVC used materials and the obtained fused compound, were performed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled and Energy dispersed X-ray analyser (EDS), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and Differential Thermal Analyser (DTA-TGA). The fused compound was a complex slag that comprised of Fe 2 SiO 4 and FeVO 4 phases.

A new compound of the formula Mg 3 In 4 V 6 O 24 belonging to the family M 3 A 4 V 6 O 24 [where M = metal(II), A = metal(III)] was obtained by the solid-state reaction method. The compound was synthesized by heating in air a mixture of Mg 3 (VO 4 ) 2 and InVO 4 or MgV 2 O 6 and In 2 O 3 or In 2 O 3 and V 2 O 5 , with a precursor of MgO. The new compound was characterized by XRD, SEM, IR, UV-Vis and DTA-TG methods. Mg 3 In 4 V 6 O 24 was shown to crystallize in the triclinic system. Its unit cell parameters were calculated. The new compound is stable in air up to 1000°C and is a semiconductor (E g * 3.3 eV).
