Comparative Research Methods

Abstract: In this entry, we discuss the opportunities and challenges of comparative research. We outline the major obstacles in terms of building a comparative theoretical framework, collecting good‐quality data and analyzing those data, and we also explicate the advantages and research questions that can be addressed when taking a comparative approach. Additionally, the entry discusses statistical techniques that can be used to analyze quantitative comparative data, and we end with a discussion on how globalization imp… Show more

“…Social entities may be based on many lines, such as geographical or political ones in the form of cross-national or regional comparisons (Mills, Van de Bunt, & De Bruijn, 2006) and the main goal of comparative research is to search for or identify variance or similarity. Comparative research differs from non-comparative work in that it attempts to reach conclusions beyond single cases and explains differences and similarities between objects of analysis and relations between objects against the backdrop of their contextual conditions (Esser & Vliegenthart, 2017).…”

“…What are the limitations and implications of the study for Science/STEM education? SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY Esser and Vliegenthart (2017) asserted that comparative studies perform several important functions that are closely interlinked: (i) enhancing understanding of one's own society against those of other systems (ii) heightening awareness of other systems, cultures and pattern of thinking/acting (iii) allowing for the testing and evaluation of certain phenomena and contributing to the development of universally applicable theory i.e. generalisation (iv) preventing over-generalisation of researchers based on own idiosynchratic experiences i.e.…”
