Comparative Reliability of Total Intracranial Volume Estimation Methods and the Influence of Atrophy in a Longitudinal Semantic Dementia Cohort

Abstract: The mid-cranial sampling of PD images achieved the best combination of precision, reliability, and user-friendliness. SPM5 is an attractive alternative if the highest level of precision is not required.

“…Intracranial volume (ICV) was calculated and used to correct the regional brain volumes analyses. Given the recent evidence about the lower precision of FreeSurfer 6 to estimate ICV than other fully automated segmentation techniques, we decided to calculated ICV by using SPM2 (http://www.fil.ion.ucl.ac.uk/spm). The SPM method was based on the subjects' segmented images in native space: gray matter, white matter, and CSF.…”

“…FreeSurfer calculates brain subvolumes by assigning a neuroanatomic label to each voxel in an MR imaging volume, on the basis of probabilistic information estimated automatically from a manually labeled training set. Several studies have validated the use of this method to quantify subcortical volume in dementia, 6 epilepsy, 7,8 and depressive disorders 9 and to evaluate the effects of aging. 10 The aim of this work was, therefore, to determine the efficacy and utility of using automatic segmentation labeling to quantify atrophy in patients with ET.…”

“…However, their clinical usefulness is limited by time-consuming work flows. 11 Recently, a novel MR imaging quantification sequence, QRAPMASTER, was developed for rapid and simultaneous sampling of the longitudinal relaxation time (T1), the transversal relaxation time (T2), and PD. 13,14 Included in this measurement is the correction for the B1 field inhomogeneity.…”

“…8 Commonly, the volumetric measures are normalized in relation to the ICV to decrease the effect of variations in head size. [9][10][11] Manual segmentation of ICV is considered the reference method. 12 This is performed by tracing the outer contour of the ICV on each frame in a stack of images covering the head.…”

“…In one study; researchers used four groups including adult controls (AC), adults with Alzheimer's disease (AD), pediatric controls (PC) and group of pediatric epilepsy and FSL subjected to tuning are the more appropriate tools for the PC group (Sargolzaei et al, 2015). Although there are many studies to prove the accuracy of the automated methods, manual methods are still preferred (Pengas et al, 2009;Nordenskjöld et al, 2013). Many study demostrated that a stereologic technique (point counting) on CT scans may provide unbiased organ volume estimations and their results were similar to gold standard studies (Sahin et al; Nisari et al) One clinical study investigated ICV control (aged 172 ± 8 days and 10-486 days.)…”
